Alicante's residential areas split roughly between the compact centre and the coastal strip to the northeast. Downtown and the old town put daily life within walking distance of the port, the market and the beach at Postiguet, while districts like Benalúa, San Blas and Carolinas Bajas are ordinary working neighborhoods with their own shops and bars. Further out, Vistahermosa is low-density villa territory on the northern edge, and Albufereta and Playa de San Juan are built around their beaches.
